TIP: Free Assets are out there!

Probably like many independents I had some business down time during the pandemic. I didn’t want to lose billable hours so I created projects for myself (that my client greenlighted). One of the projects was to comb through sites that offer FREE assets (photos and illustrations) and download appropriate ones into my image archives. Here are my three favorite sites for free stuff…and who doesn’t like free stuff! www.unsplash.com, www.pexels.com and www.pixabay.com. Nowadays I search for images there first before (if needed) doing a deeper dive into fee-based stockhouses.

The Grid: In my design inspiration pile

Grids are all around us. Think websites. Think even more about responsive websites. Think printed newspapers, magazines and catalogs. Think Mondrian. I have a dog-eared copy of Massimo Vignelli and Peter Laundy’s Graphic Design for Non-Profit Organizations produced in 1980 for The American Institute of Graphic Design (AIGA). It featured grids and not only mere grids but the gold standard of grids.

A grid helps to organize content (both text and visual). When a grid is formatted it also organizes the hierarchy of content.
